Vital government legislation introduced to tackle Violence Against Women and Girls
I am pleased to be part of a government that prioritises protecting children and victims of crime. Over the last couple of weeks, the government has introduced vital legislation to support our commitment of halving Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in a decade. The three areas include, removing automatic parental access from perpetrators; restricting parental rights for rapists whose children were born through rape and criminalising pornography that depicts strangulatio

Respect for Shopworker's Week
Everyone deserves to feel safe at work - abuse should never be part of the job. That’s why I’m supporting Usdaw’s Freedom from Fear campaign during their Respect for Shopworker’s Week. Retail workers are essential workers on the frontline of serving our communities, they deserve to be treated with respect. In the last twelve months, the Government has invested in policing, with specific projects to tackle retail crime, and that appears to be having an effect. We know that it

Constituency Garden of Remembrance honours Preston's fallen
This year we mark the 80th Anniversary of the end of WW2. 1945 was not only a moment of victory, but it was also a time to reckon with the immense cost of war. Over 380,000 British military personnel lost their lives and countless others returned home physically and emotionally scarred from battle. In partnership with the Royal British Legion, there is a Constituency Garden of Remembrance installed every November in New Palace Yard, within the Parliamentary estate to honour t

Talk Money Week
It's #TalkMoney Week! New research from MaPS shows that just half (54%) of people in the North West feel comfortable talking to their friends about personal finances and 6 in 10 (63%) are feeling comfortable talking about the topic with members of their family. #TalkMoney Week is a great opportunity to talk to friends, family and colleagues about money. You can #StartTheConversation by: ➡️working out how much someone might need for retirement https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en

Action demanded from Places for People to stop bed bug infestation at Preston housing complex
I am appalled that Places for People still haven’t adequately dealt with the devastating bed bug infestation at Clifton House, #Preston since I first raised this issue, a year ago. Elderly and vulnerable constituents report that they are living without furniture and carpeting and continue to suffer significantly with their mental and physical health. I am urgently calling on Places for People to: 1. Comprehensively review the extent of bed bugs and bed bug eggs in each prop

Be a Kind Neighbour this Fireworks Season
Fireworks cause stress and anxiety in animals. Did you know that 66% of animals are negatively impacted by private firework displays, and 40% of pet owners feel awkward discussing their fireworks concerns with their neighbours? As the MP for #Preston, I am passionate about the health and welfare of animals in the area, and this can be massively impacted during fireworks season. Make sure you think of animals and their owners in your community. If you’re holding a private fire

'Glow ride' cycling event to encourage female riders in Preston
A mass ‘glow ride’ event is taking place in #Preston on Wednesday 22 October at 5.30pm, where residents will ride to show their support for safer cycling for women all year round. As the evenings get darker, sadly many women put their bikes away. One in five women feel their journeys are limited by concerns about cycling in the dark. We are lucky in Preston, as we are home to the Guild Wheel, an excellent cycle and walking track and although it is open at all times, it is not

Reminder to all schools, youth groups, community organisations and home educators in #Preston to sign up for UK Parliament Week which runs 24-30 Nov. £500k funding secured to tackle homelessness in Preston
The Government is providing councils with an £84 million cash boost to help prevent homelessness and support families this winter. Immediate help for children and families in temporary accommodation is at heart of this funding. As winter approaches and temperatures plummet, more people are likely to face the prospect of sleeping on cold streets and they urgently need support. The scourge of homelessness and rough-sleeping increased in our area under the last Government. I kno

Be Flood Ready!
This Flood Action Week (13-19 October), I am urging all Preston constituents to think about being flood ready. You can do this in a number of ways including: signing up for flood warnings, preparing a flood plan, and checking your long term flood risk. Aside from the financial cost, the emotional toll of flooding can be devastating and long-lasting. It is important to understand the flood risk for where you live and take steps to protect yourself, your home and your family. P

Synagogue attack in Manchester
I am shocked and saddened to hear about the horrific attack on worshippers attending the Heaton Park Synagogue today in celebration of Yom Kippur, the holiest day for the Jewish community. My thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have sadly died, those who are injured, and all who have been affected by today’s attack. As someone who was born and grew up in Greater Manchester, my heart goes out to everyone affected. We must continue to stand against antisemitis

£20m funding announced for Ribbleton
I’m really pleased share some positive news for #Preston. We’ve secured £20 million of long-term funding for #Ribbleton. The funding will deliver £2 million every year for the next ten years, supporting local jobs, community facilities, green spaces, and measures to make the area safer and stronger. It will be up for everyone in Ribbleton to decide how it’s spent. Separately, Preston will receive a further £1.5m as part of the Pride in Place Impact Fund. This is a huge invest
