During Baby Loss Awareness Week (9-15 October), I have tabled a number of Parliamentary Questions to raise awareness and ask the Health Minister about plans to improve maternity safety in the UK.
A joint report by Baby Loss awareness charities, Sands and Tommy’s, highlights the inequalities that exist in maternity and neonatal care. They calculate that at least 1 in 5 stillbirths and baby deaths may have been prevented with better care, equating to over 800 babies’ lives in 2022-23.
Sadly, more babies are lost by mothers from Black and Asian backgrounds and women who come from deprived backgrounds.
We need nationally agreed standards of care to prevent more avoidable deaths.
