As the evenings get darker, sadly many women put their bikes away. One in five women feel their journeys are limited by concerns about cycling in the dark.

We are lucky in Preston, as we are home to the Guild Wheel, an excellent cycle and walking track and although it is open at all times, it is not lit. It is advisable to bring your own lights in the evenings to ensure safety.

Cycling UK, the nation’s cycling charity are running a campaign, My ride. Our Right. which seeks to address the fact that women in the UK cycle half as often as men, and are less likely to experience the benefits.

Women want to cycle more – but research shows they are more likely to be put off by concerns about safety. 58% of women believe their cycle journeys are limited by safety concerns and a lack of suitable infrastructure. Good routes bring confidence: 45% of women say that a direct cycle route to their nearest town centre or high street would encourage them to cycle more.

The ‘glow ride’ event which has been organised by Preston Pedals will start at the Moor Park Avenue (Deepdale end), ride past the the University and Harris Museum, along Fishergate and past the train station, briefly entering Avenham Park before making the return journey.
