Today marks the start of Black History Month and this year’s theme is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’. It highlights the profound contributions made by Black people; leaders, activists and pioneers who have shaped history, whilst also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth.

Black History Month 2025 will honour key anniversaries, including the 60th anniversary of the Race Relations Act. The 1965 Act was the first UK legislation to ban discrimination in public places based on race, colour, or ethnic origin and to make incitement to racial hatred an offence.
These milestones serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice, and the tireless efforts of those who have fought for the rights of Black people and communities.
In the King’s Speech last July, the Government announced a Draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill to legislate mandatory ethnicity and disability pay gap reporting for larger employers. This will tackle pay disparities and remove barriers to opportunity for ethnic minority and disabled workers, driving up household income for all.
At a time when some have tried to spread hatred and division by claiming the St George's Cross and Union Jack flags for their own cause, it is more important than ever to remember that these flags belong to us all, including the BAME community, who continue to contribute both locally in Preston and to our country as a whole.
