Mark warns of a "Lost Generation"

(January 27, 2012)

Mark has warned of a "lost generation" after unemployment statistics for Preston were published by the House of Commons Library and the Office of National Statistics showed a rise in unemployment claimants.

The number of unemployed claimants in Preston in December 2011 was 3,056. This represents a rate of 7.7% of the economically active population aged 16 - 64. There has been a 27.7% increase in unemployment claimants  for 24 year olds and under from December last year. Preston is now in the top 20% of Parliamentary constituencies for unemployment claimants.

Mark said "Unemployment has now soared to the highest level for a generation and long term youth unemployment has more than doubled since January last year.

The impact of the Tory led Governments austerity measures is plain to see. Prices rising, squeezed living standards, soaring unemployment, this is a return to the Thatcher years of the 1980's.

The cuts are too far too fast and the Government needs to wake up to the job crisis we now face or we will condemn a generation to unemployment."
