14 May 2010
Mark was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Preston at the 2010 General Election which was held on Thursday 6th May 2010. Mark held his seat in Preston with a majority of 7,733 and 48.2% share of the vote.
Immediately after his victory, Mark spoke of his joy at being re-elected: ‘I am grateful once again to the voters for returning me to Westminster to represent the people of Preston and I am looking forward to continuing to work hard for them in Parliament. I would like to thank those voters, here in Preston who have entrusted me to serve another term at a time when the country has suffered the worst economic downturn for some time. I’ve spent the last ten years bringing the benefits of the Labour Government to this proud new city of Preston and I will work tirelessly alongside my colleagues in Parliament for another term.’
Mark was first elected to serve as MP for Preston during a by-election in 2000 and has successfully been re-elected at every general election since; in 2001, 2005 and 2010. Boundary changes prior to this general election have meant that the Bamber Bridge and Walton-le-Dale areas now fall outside the constituency boundary and for the first time Ingol is included within the Preston Constituency. Mark said: ‘I look forward to meeting with and working for my new constituents in the Ingol area and I will be looking to hold one of my regular MP’s advice surgeries in that area in the near future’.
City Council Elections were also held at the same time and several of Mark’s colleagues were either re-elected or newly elected to serve as Councillors at Preston City Council. Mark said: ‘I would like to congratulate my colleagues in the City Council who have been elected to serve on the City Council and offer my thanks to them as well as the supporters, volunteers and well-wishers who have contributed tremendously throughout the election campaign.’
The results for Preston in full were as follows:
