Mark goes batty in Fishwick
12 Aug 2009
Mark will be joining Park Ranger, Terry Blackburn on a Bat and Moth Walk at Fishwick Nature Reserve on Friday 14th August to discover the secret world of bats and moths.
There are 17 bat species in the UK and they make up more that a quarter of UK mammal species. All of these are protected by law, because their numbers have decreased dramatically. Bats are an essential part of our natural heritage and are indicators of a green and healthy environment, so their future is directly linked to our quality of life and the quality of our environment.
Similarly, whilst some moth species are thriving in the UK, a fifth of all British moths are losing numbers sharply enough to cause concern amongst conservationists. Over 2400 species of moths have been identified in the UK. Moths are also indicators of the general health of the environment because they occupy most habitats. Habitat destruction and climate change are being blamed for the observed decline.
Mark Hendrick MP said: “I am looking forward to undertaking this field study to help highlight the issue of bat and moth conservation in our local area. I would encourage all families to go on a field trip to learn about the local species and do their bit for conserving our environment”.
There are still a limited number of places left on the Bat and Moth Walk on Friday 14th August 2009 at 8pm. Please telephone 01772 906471 to book a place.
